Wish Your Printer Would Always Produce High Quality Images? Here’s the Key!

Just like a vehicle undergoes an oil change every 3,000 – 6,000 miles to ensure that it’s running smoothly and efficiently, laser printers also need routine maintenance. Your printer will often provide plenty of notice before any of its consumable parts need to be replaced. Lights and warning messages may appear when there is 25% life left remaining. Many printers have a way to indicate exactly how much use is left before replacement is absolutely needed.  Here’s what you need to know about maintenance and the printer parts that keep your device in optimal condition!

First on this list is a maintenance kit. A maintenance kit is a set of various parts and has an expected life – this can be from 20,000 pages up to 200,000 pages depending on your machine. Included in this kit is the fuser, which is the part in your printer that fuses the toner to your page. As a general rule of thumb, you can expect to change your fuser every 3-5 toner cartridges. Aside from a fuser, a maintenance kit often includes … Read more.

This is what Your Printer is Trying to Say!

“This printer was working fine an hour ago. What’s going on? I can’t read this document and I just replaced the toner,” you exclaim. You see a non-descript status message on the printer dashboard that originally showed up several weeks ago and you wonder, “What does this mean? Was I supposed to do something?”

This has happened to all of us at one time or another. It’s easy to brush aside a status message when your printer appears to be working. One of the more common messages where this occurs is “low-toner.” You may find yourself waiting until the crisp image begins to degrade before replacing your toner cartridge. This is fine but what happens when other messages are ignored?

Enter printer maintenance and the printer parts that keep your device in optimal condition!

Three Common Printer Problems with an Easy Fix

Why wait for printer repair service only to find out that you could have fixed it yourself? When you have a problem with your printer, stop, take a deep breath, and check these 3 items:

  1. Confirm that your printer is plugged in and ready to print. Check all your cables and/or wireless connections. Be sure that you have selected the correct printer from your computer and that the printer driver is installed.
  2. Follow the instructions on your printer control panel. This may be as simple as “load paper” or may involve a few steps to unjam the paper. Many printers indicate the location of a paper jam and the steps to correct the problem. Also, be sure that the correct type of paper is being used for your printer and print job.
  3. If print quality is an issue, check the toner/ink cartridge. If it’s almost out of toner/ink, the fix may be as simple as replacing your toner cartridge.

Compatible Toner Cartridges: a Win-Win for Your Company and the Environment

Compatible, Recycled, Remanufactured, or Refurbished Toner Cartridges - These toner names are interchangeable.  They started out as an OEM cartridge but have been reused in various ways and resold again.  There are several benefits to using compatible toner cartridges:

Go for the Win with Compatible Toner Cartridges!

  • Quality – When you purchase from reputable companies like MCS, the remanufactured cartridges are disassembled, cleaned, and tested with most parts replaced before filling the cartridge with new toner.
  • Cost – Purchasing compatible toner cartridges can save your business an average of 30-60% per cartridge compared to the OEM. Beware of companies that sell the cartridges for much less than street prices for compatibles. They often just drill a hole in the plastic shell and refill it with toner and insert a plug. These "Drill and Fill" companies give recycled cartridges a bad name.
  • Warranty – Both OEM and Compatible Toner Cartridges can fail so it’s important to be sure that they are backed by a solid warranty. OEM toner has a 30-day manufacturer warranty from the purchase date. MCS customers who purchase Compatible Toner Cartridges are covered by our “no-questions asked” immediate replacement policy for the life of the cartridge.
  • Environmentally Responsible - Choosing to purchase a compatible toner cartridge benefits the environment in many ways. Read our article on toner cartridge recycling in Ann Arbor to learn the positive impact you can have on the environment by recycling your e-waste.

Printer Cartridges: Can a Toner Cartridge Save You Money?

Laser printers and their toner cartridges can cost more.  However, it’s important to consider the long-term cost savings.  Toner cartridges will print more pages than an ink cartridge and often have a lower cost per page.  Also, determine whether or not you want to print in color or if monochrome printing (black ink or toner only) will suit your needs. Monochrome laser printing can cost considerably less than printing in color.  Be sure to read the product specifications to determine if this is the best option for you.

Printer Cartridges: The Difference Between Toner and Ink Cartridges

When your office printer decides to stop working in the middle of a project and you seek out new options for a new printer, the number of options and the technical terms can be overwhelming. The most common reply to your question is “Do you want a laser printer or an inkjet printer?”  You think to yourself, “Beats me, what’s the difference? I just want my report to look good!” Some of the technology can be quite complex, but we’ll keep the answer straight forward and simple.

Laser printers use a specialized process involving an electrical charge, to apply color to a page.  A toner cartridge, rather than ink cartridge is used for this process. Learn more here!

Basics of Custom Product Label Design

You’ve taken the time to define your customer, company, and product.  This valuable information can be used to design a custom product label that your customers are sure to find!  Now it’s time to design your label.
Here’s the basics!

1) The front of the label is typically more general in nature, and may include your logo, product name, tag line or product description, and quantity.

2) Provide more detail on the back, including product description, company or product story, instructions for use, ingredients, barcode, and other relevant information.

3)  Keep in mind that the size of the label will drive the font size and amount of information presented.  The words must be readable!  The style, size, and color of the font all contribute to the readability.  If it’s too elaborate or small, your efforts may be wasted. The contrast between the color of the font and background also impacts readability. A light font needs to paired with a darker background for optimal readability.  For example, a label with light-yellow wording against a medium yellow background is sure to frustrate anyone who attempts to read it.  Whereas a label with light-yellow wording against a dark blue background is easier to read given the level on contrast.
