Is it Better to Recycle or Refill Toner Cartridges?

toner recycling ann arbor, toner cartridge recycling ann arbor
Reusing ink cartridges definitely creates less waste, but it’s important to remember they can only be refilled a handful of times. To refill your cartridges:

  1. Buy a refill kit at an office supply store, or online.
  2. Make sure to protect your hands!
  3. Remove the cartridge and locate the two refill holes or toner refill port, which might be under the label.
  4. There should be directions included in your kit – make sure you read them carefully to determine exactly how to fill the cartridges you’ve purchased.
  5. Reseal the ink cartridge after refilling it.
  6. Clean the ink refill syringe after each use!

Toner cartridges can’t be reused indefinitely. If you have an inkjet printer, don’t let the ink run out completely before refilling it. Once your inkjet sponge becomes dried out, they can’t be refilled.

Go Eco-Friendly with Compatible Ink Cartridges

toner recycling ann arbor, toner cartridge recycling ann arbor
Want to make your company practices and policies more eco-friendly this year?

As you look at your office policies and procedures, one easy way you can reduce your carbon footprint is with purchasing ink and toner and recycling your toner cartridges.

Compatible printer cartridges, also known as generic or third-party cartridges, offer several compelling reasons why they are better for the environment.

1. Reduced Resource Consumption:

Compatible cartridges are typically manufactured using recycled materials or new materials that require fewer resources compared to OEM cartridges. By repurposing existing materials or using more sustainable alternatives, the production of compatible cartridges conserves resources such as plastic, metals, and energy.

2. Minimized Waste Generation:

One of the most significant environmental benefits of compatible cartridges is the reduction of waste. Unlike OEM cartridges, which often end up in landfills after use, compatible cartridges can be recycled and reused multiple times. This circular approach to cartridge usage significantly decreases the amount of electronic waste and contributes to a more sustainable waste management system.

Eco-Friendly Printing Routines: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle Electronics!

toner cartridge recycling ann arbor

Is your office participating in toner cartridge recycling?

In April, many companies brainstorm how they can incorporate more environmentally-friendly practices in their daily business routines in honor of Earth Day.

Not sure where to start? We’ve got the tips for you and are ready to offer our partnership in electronic recycling to help your business takes the proper precautions to lessen your environmental footprint in the Ann Arbor community.

Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle

Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle! This is the obvious starting point to begin eco-friendly printing solutions in your office. You can start reducing by encouraging your office to keep documents digital, and only print when 100% necessary.

Another way to reduce is double-sided printing. Did you know the average office employee prints over 10,000 sheets of paper per a year? That’s almost a whole tree’s worth of paper! Small changes like this can be highly impactful.

Ways to reuse can be starting a scrap paper bin in your office for notetaking, or printing drafts. Another way we recommend to reuse is purchasing refillable ink cartridges.

Electronic Recycling

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says that recycling electronics helps reduce environmental pollution of harmful toxins like mercury, lead, and cadmium in landfills and our soil. It also conserves energy that would be generated while manufacturing new products by reducing the demand for raw materials.

We can help you reduce e-waste by making the process of electronic recycling easy! We collect empty toner cartridges, obsolete computers, monitors, printers, and other office equipment from our current customers free of charge. Not one of our customers? Don’t worry, we’re happy to pick up your e-waste for $100.

Eco-Friendly Printing Routines: Recycle vs. Reuse Your Toner Cartridges

Not sure how to start the process of going green?

Is your office already recycling printer toner?

In April, many companies brainstorm how they can incorporate more environmentally-friendly practices in their daily business routines in honor of Earth Day.

Don’t know where to begin? We’ve got the tips for you and are ready to offer our partnership in electronic recycling to help your business takes the proper precautions to lessen your environmental footprint in the Ann Arbor community.

Toner Cartridge Recycling vs. Toner Cartridge Reuse

While both recycling and reusing are both amazing eco-friendly strategies, reusing is the better option. Reusing ink and toner cartridges will help keep the e-waste out of landfills more effectively.

Compatible toners are built from scratch and are a cheaper option, due to being made with single use plastics. Re-manufactured toners can have the inside springs and rollers replaced so that they can be refilled and reused in the future.

There is zero difference in the printing quality among the two options, yet the latter is more effective at reducing your carbon footprint.

What’s the Difference Between Cartridge Reuse and Recycling?

toner cartridge recycling ann arbor

Do you go through a large amount of toner cartridges at your office every month?

Are you looking for a more eco-friendly, sustainable way to get rid of them? Have you considered toner cartridge recycling?

Used toner cartridges can accumulate quickly, especially if your business prints a lot of marketing materials, meeting agendas, or inter-office memos. If you’re struggling to find storage space for toner cartridges, large batch recycling is a great option for you!

E-waste is the mist rapidly growing segment of the municipal solid waste stream. Recycling e-waste benefits the environment by:

  • Conserving natural resources
  • Disposing of toxic chemicals properly
  • Protecting and supporting your community by reducing the amount of e-waste that’s incinerated and placed in landfills, which can negatively impact air and water quality.

What’s the Difference Between Cartridge Reuse and Recycling?

Many people use “reuse” and “recycle” interchangeably, but when it comes to sustainability, there are specific differences.

While recycling is a viable way to contribute to renewable resources, reuse actually requires
less energy consumption and helps keep materials from landfills. The best solution for a robust economy is a combination of recycling and reuse that can help collect and dispose of waste in a way that doesn’t impact already overburdened landfills!

For toner cartridges specifically, you can use the “reuse and recycle” method by using remanufactured cartridges.

Make sure you take into account that while there’s no distinction in print quality based on manufacturing type (compatible vs. remanufactured vs. original equipment manufacturer (OEM), there are differences across various brands and manufacturers owing to the manufacturing conditions as well as the post-manufacturing evaluation process.

Implement These “Green” Solutions at Your Office

toner cartridge recycling ann arbor

Have you considered toner cartridge recycling as a part of your overall sustainability plan?

Besides in-office recycling programs, or switching from paper and plastic to reusable materials, you can also go green with the way you print at your company!

There are several ways you can increase the green solutions in your office:

  • Responsible paper sourcing: Make sure that either your paper or other raw materials come from eco-friendly sources. Besides recycled fibers, coating, bleaching, and other variables all play into paper’s environmental impact. Evaluate other business practices from your suppliers like shipping with hybrid vehicles, encouraging employees to telecommute, or other “green” practices.
  • Using soy and vegetable-based printer inks: Traditional inks are petroleum-based and have a number of negative environmental effects. Vegetable-based inks, usually made with soy, are more sustainable. They make recycling easier too, as they make de-inking easier.

How to Implement an Office-Wide Recycling Program

toner cartridge recycling ann arbor

Recycling in general is a great way to bring your office together for a cause. You might be doing this already – having a recycling area for scrap paper, or bottles and cans in the office kitchen. Why not start doing this with ink cartridges too?

Here’s why recycling printer ink is important:

  1. Nearly 8 cartridges are thrown away per second in the United States alone.
  2. It takes one gallon of oil to make a mew laser cartridge.
  3. About 70 percent of used printer cartridges are being thrown away instead of recycled.
  4. A laser cartridge in landfill can take up to 450 (!) years to decompose, but some components can take over 1,000 years!

According to 1-800-RECYCLING.com, only around 30% of cartridges are recycled, which leaves a great opportunity for organizations and businesses like yours to participate in recycling programs.

Encourage your staff to recycle cartridges after they’re no longer usable instead of throwing them away!

The Benefits of Recycling E-Waste

We all know that electronics aren’t made to last forever. Even the most well-made computers and other devices have a shelf life! So, what happens after they break down? How do you get rid of old electronics safely?

E-waste is short for “electronic waste.” It’s and is trash that’s generated from broken, obsolete, or surplus electronic devices like computers, laptops, batteries, toner cartridges, and TVs. These devices often contain toxic chemicals and other hazardous materials, so it’s important to dispose of them properly.

According to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, “e-waste is the most rapidly growing segment of the municipal solid waste stream.” Recycling your e-waste benefits the environment in several ways:

  • Conserves natural resources. Electronics contain many materials that can be reused, refurbished, and recycled, such as those found in toner cartridges. The manufacturing process consumes energy to produce new products, which, depending on the process, may contribute to greenhouse gas emissions and water pollution. Refurbished toner cartridges may use significantly less raw materials than brand new cartridges. An example would be MSE remanufactured toner cartridges which use “79% less materials” than their “OEM equivalent.”
  • Properly disposes of toxic chemicals. E-waste may contain high concentrations of chemicals and metals, including mercury, lead, and cadmium. Proper recycling and disposal keep these toxins out of our soil and water and protects the food we eat and the water we drink.
