Celebrate Earth Day with E-Waste Recycling

If you’re like most businesses, you generate e-waste on a regular basis. Perhaps you’ve been storing your e-waste until you find a suitable, inexpensive source for disposal.

Here are 3 ways to dispose of toner cartridges correctly and safely:

1. Contact the manufacturer to take your empty cartridges. Many major brands have their own recycling programs you can take part in.

2. Find a local company to take your cartridges! MCS collects empty toner cartridges, obsolete computers, monitors, printers, and other office equipment from our current customers FREE of charge!  Not our customer? We’re happy to pick up your e-waste for $100.

3. Toner cartridges should always be disposed of in an appropriate container or bin and shouldn’t be treated like a regular trash item. If you’re at home, you can put your cartridges in the recycling bin. At the office, find out if a recycling program is already in place.

  2. If you live in Ann Arbor, you can utilize Recycle Ann Arbor’s Drop-Off Station (DOS) at 2950 E. Ellsworth Road for proper appliance recycling and disposal.
  3. MCS collects empty toner cartridges, obsolete computers, monitors, printers, and other office equipment from our current customers FREE of charge!  Not our customer? We’re happy to pick up your e-waste for $100.

The Benefits of Recycling E-Waste

We all know that electronics aren’t made to last forever. Even the most well-made computers and other devices have a shelf life! So, what happens after they break down? How do you get rid of old electronics safely?

E-waste is short for “electronic waste.” It’s and is trash that’s generated from broken, obsolete, or surplus electronic devices like computers, laptops, batteries, toner cartridges, and TVs. These devices often contain toxic chemicals and other hazardous materials, so it’s important to dispose of them properly.

According to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, “e-waste is the most rapidly growing segment of the municipal solid waste stream.” Recycling your e-waste benefits the environment in several ways:

  • Conserves natural resources. Electronics contain many materials that can be reused, refurbished, and recycled, such as those found in toner cartridges. The manufacturing process consumes energy to produce new products, which, depending on the process, may contribute to greenhouse gas emissions and water pollution. Refurbished toner cartridges may use significantly less raw materials than brand new cartridges. An example would be MSE remanufactured toner cartridges which use “79% less materials” than their “OEM equivalent.”
  • Properly disposes of toxic chemicals. E-waste may contain high concentrations of chemicals and metals, including mercury, lead, and cadmium. Proper recycling and disposal keep these toxins out of our soil and water and protects the food we eat and the water we drink.

Why Hire Professional Printer Repair?

If you have a business-class printer, you’ve probably also had issues with your printer jamming or other issues at the most inopportune times.

We put our business printers through the ringer on a daily basis, so it makes sense that they need a little more TLC to keep working reliably over time.

What are your options when your printer displays a dreaded “error” message?

You could fix it yourself, but if you don’t repair it correctly, it could cost you more money in the long run. The other option is to hire a professional company for printer repair.

What goes into a printer assessment when the professionals are called? At MCS, we have a solid process that takes into account the price and value of your machine vs. the cost of labor. Here’s how it works:

If you think your printer needs repairs, instead of paying for a full hour of service to simply have your printer looked at, MCS offers a $25 printer assessment fee.  Our technician will diagnose the issues and let you know if the machine can be fixed along with an estimated cost of repair, including parts and labor.  When a repair does make sense, MCS will apply this $25 printer assessment fee toward the first hour of labor.

Find out more about our printer repair process on our website!

Our mission at MCS is to provide the very best value in printer repair and service, custom labels, bar code and data collection products, paper, and more to the Ann Arbor business community and beyond. Printer Repair Tips and Tricks

Tired of not being able to rely on your printer?

Tired of not being able to get clear documents when you need them?

We understand your frustration. We can help make your life a little easier. Repairing your printer on your own can save you money, but having the pros fix it will save you many potential headaches.

Before you call in the experts, try these tips first:
  1. Lagging printer speed – Make sure your firmware and drivers are up to date. If you have a wireless printer, try moving closer to the router to improve your signal.
  2. Reduced print quality – Your print head could be blocked. This usually happens when you don’t use your inkjet printer frequently, which causes ink to dry. Try cleaning the print head and testing it again.
  3. Printer doesn’t work at all – Check to see if you have an error message and try fixing that first. Next, try rebooting your printer and computer. If that doesn’t work, ensure that all your cords are inserted correctly. If your printer is wireless, try restarting your router; there could be a problem with the signal. Some printers have a built-in troubleshooting system you can try if nothing else works.

While some repairs can be done DIY-style, others will require parts and a technician. When labor costs are involved, the bill for repair can quickly skyrocket.

If you think your printer needs repairs, instead of paying for a full hour of service to simply have your printer looked at, MCS offers a $25 printer assessment fee.  Our technician will diagnose the issues and let you know if the machine can be fixed along with an estimated cost of repair, including parts and labor.

DIY Printer Repair Tips

We get lots of calls from customers and frustrated business owners alike who are having trouble with their printers. Printer problems always seem to appear at the worst time!

If you’ve got an important presentation or meeting on the schedule, you don’t have time to wait for a printer repair technician to come out.

Here are a few of the most common print issues we hear about and how you can fix them:

  1. “My printer won’t print!” – Before you panic, check to see if your printer is communicating properly with your computer. If it isn’t, it may be that you need to update drivers or firmware. A pending Windows update might be the cause too, so install any updates, shut down your computer, and try again. Instructions for driver updates can be found on the manufacturer’s website (HP.com, Brother.com, Epson.com, etc.).

  2. “My printer says I have a paper jam, but there’s nothing in the tray.” Often, this can be fixed with some canned air and blowing the machine out. There may also be a piece of paper inside the printer that ripped off and is stuck – you might need a flashlight to see it. Take the paper out of the tray, open all flaps, and look inside.
